- Rapid rise yeast
- All-purpose flour
- Coarse salt
- Warm tap water
- Extra flour for dusting
- Nonstick cooking spray
- Dutch oven (4-6 quart)

How to Make the Recipe
To make this Crusty Dutch Oven Bread, start by combining warm water and yeast in a large bowl and letting it sit for 10 minutes. Then, stir in flour and salt until well combined. Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel and let it rest in a warm area for an hour. Meanwhile, preheat your Dutch oven in a hot oven.
Once the dough has risen, transfer it to a floured surface and shape it into a tight ball. Optionally, slash the top of the bread dough with a sharp knife to help it expand in the oven. Carefully place the dough into the preheated Dutch oven, cover with the lid, and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the lid and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, until the bread is golden brown. Allow it to cool slightly on a wire rack before slicing and serving.

Variations
While this Crusty Dutch Oven Bread recipe is delicious as is, there are plenty of ways to customize it to suit your tastes. Try adding dry or fresh herbs, cheese, or garlic to the dough for a savory twist. For a sweeter option, mix in cinnamon and raisins or chocolate chips. You can also experiment with different types of flour, such as whole wheat flour or rye, for a unique flavor profile.

Storage and Make-Ahead Tips
This Crusty Dutch Oven Bread is best enjoyed fresh out of the oven, but it can be stored in an airtight container for up to three days. To reheat, simply place slices in a toaster or warm in a low oven until heated through. Alternatively, you can freeze the bread for up to three months. Just wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and aluminum foil before freezing. Allow it to thaw at room temperature before reheating.

Common Questions about Dutch Oven Bread
- Can I use active dry yeast instead of rapid rise yeast? Yes, you can substitute active dry yeast for rapid rise yeast in this recipe. However, you may need to let the dough rise for a longer period of time, typically around 1-2 hours, until doubled in size.
- Can I use bread flour instead of all-purpose flour? Yes, bread flour can be used in place of all-purpose flour for a slightly chewier texture. You may need to adjust the amount of flour slightly, as bread flour absorbs more liquid than all-purpose flour.
- What size Dutch oven should I use? A 4-6 quart Dutch oven is ideal for this recipe. Using a smaller Dutch oven may cause the bread to rise too much and touch the lid, while a larger Dutch oven may result in a flatter loaf.
- Can I add other ingredients to the dough, like nuts or seeds? Absolutely! Feel free to customize the recipe by adding your favorite nuts, seeds, or dried fruits to the dough for added flavor and texture. Just be mindful of the amount to avoid overcrowding the dough.
