Why You’ll Love This Recipe:

The Spooky Charcuterie Board is the epitome of Halloween fun and creativity. First, it’s incredibly easy to put together, making it the perfect option for busy hosts or those who want to spend more time enjoying the festivities than in the kitchen.

With just a handful of ingredients and 10 minutes of assembly time, you’ll have a show-stopping centerpiece that’s sure to impress your guests.

Secondly, the Spooky Charcuterie Board offers a delightful mix of flavors and textures. From the sweet mini powdered donuts to the burst of freshness from the blueberries and the irresistible chocolatey goodness of rolos and chocolate chips, each element complements the other, creating a harmonious taste experience.

It’s a treat that’s as delightful to the taste buds as it is to the eyes, making it a crowd-pleaser for both kids and adults alike.

How to Assemble the Spooky Charcuterie Board:

Assembling the Spooky Charcuterie Board is a creative and interactive process. Start by choosing a charcuterie board or a beautiful wooden cutting board as your canvas. Place four mini powdered donuts at the top of the board to represent the top of the skull and three more at the bottom as the base of the skull (these bottom ones will likely be moved after)

Step One And Two

Next, get creative with your spooky elements. Use blueberries to create circular eyes for the skull and lay out chocolate chips in a triangle shape to form the nose. Place Rolos approximately where you’d like the mouth to be.

If you are having a hard time keeping the shapes in place you could use some cookie cutters (sharp side down) to hold the shapes in place as you build, and just leave there to be removed when finished eating.

Step 3 And 4 Assembling Spooky Charcuterie Board

For the finishing touches, encircle one eye and the top of the nose with mini marshmallows. Fill in the other eye socket with white chocolate chips and mini marshmallows to create a hauntingly beautiful contrast. The popcorn serves as the bottom half of the skull’s face, and you can shape it around the rolos to complete the mouth.

Step 5 And Final Assembling Spooky Charcuterie Board

At this point, you can choose to leave the bottom donuts as the base of the skull or remove them for a cleaner look. You could use those bottom ones layered on the top of the skull, depending on how many people will be eating this with you.

To add a spooky twist, decorate the board with fake plastic spiders and candy corn around the edges, creating a hauntingly delicious ambiance. Small pumpkins with a pop or orange are another great decoration for around the board.

Additionally down along the serving table if you have other items, it would be funny to add skeleton hands, and feet in their approximate locations, holding on to other bowls and such.

Variations for the Halloween Charcuterie Board:

The Spooky Charcuterie Board is highly versatile, allowing you to get creative and customize these snack boards to your liking. Here are some variations to consider:

  1. Savory Charcuterie Board: Swap out some of the sweet elements for savory ones, such as adding slices, or small blocks of cheese. You could surround the skull with cured meats, and savory crackers. This variation offers a perfect balance of flavors for guests who prefer a more savory experience.
  2. Ghost Shaped Charcuterie: This could very easily become a Ghost shaped board, if you simply carry on the white elements into a gown of sorts and remove the donut ears, building the charcuterie on a longer board like this one.
  3. Halloween Cheese Board and Fruit Version: This could definitely be all white cheese cubes and slices for the skull portion along with dark fruits. Also a white fleshed apples with the skin peeled off and make sure it is soaked well in lemon juice to avoid browning, then pat dry with paper towels. For the dark facial voids grapes, blackberries, blueberries and (optionally)chocolate. You can have a small bowl of Honey on the side of the board, and even a separate tray of crackers arranged like a rib cage. Cheese options include
    • Mozzarella cheese sticks cut in small slices,
    • White Cheddar
    • Goat Cheese
    • Feta crumbles
    • Gouda
    • Brie (might be a little messy and might work better for a ghost version mentioned above)
    • Havarti
    • Semi-Soft Cheese, to add different textures
  4. Other Optional White Treats: For Skull elements you could also consider
    • White chocolate covered pretzels
    • White yogurt covered raisins
    • White cubes of cheese
  5. Other Optional Dark Treats: Any Chocolate elements will work for the voids where the eyes nose or mouth should be.
    • Any mini candy bar bites,
    • Truffles
    • Chocolate pretzels.
    • Black Olives – If placed in a foil muffin tin or small bowl (to contain the moisture),
    • Dark Grapes
    • Blackberries
    • Oreos
  6. Decorate the Charcuterie Board: Outside of the skull you could cover the wood board with more items, that are similar colored items as a background so that the skull still pops and is noticeable and defined. In this case you would probably need to cover the entire wood section of the board for it to work. I would avoid white elements. Good options include:
    • Gardetto Garlic Roasted Rye Chips
    • Sliced roasted beef
    • Jerky meats
    • Nuts, like almonds with their skins on Walnuts (make sure you know ahead that no one has allergies).
    • Dark Toned Cookies, Oreos (or if that feels to dark them Chocolate chip cookies), keep the colors uniform and on the darker side. Once you have wrapped the skull shape itself in one dominate color you could add other slightly different colors like Prosciutto and salami. (Technically the prosciutto could be like peeling skin, but that may be a little too gross!)

Storage and Make-Ahead Tips:

The Spooky Charcuterie Board is best assembled right before serving to maintain its visual appeal and freshness. However, you can prepare some of the elements in advance to save time.

For example, you can pre-unwrap the rolos and store them in an airtight container. Additionally, you can prepare the popcorn and store it in a sealed bag until you’re ready to assemble the board, or just buy Skinny pop (or a white popcorn you like) for a fast premade option.
