What is a charcuterie board?

Charcuterie (pronounciation: “shaar·koo·tr·ee”) comes from the French word for butcher (charcutier, meaning pork butcher specifically).

A charcuterie board (also called a charcuterie plate or charcuterie platter) is a traditional European offering for a simple breakfast, brunch, or lunch. It can also be a starter for a larger meal.

Charcuterie platters traditionally feature a selection of meats and cheeses. They are usually served with sliced bread (such as baguette or ciabatta), crackers, fruit (fresh or dried), and assorted other accouterments like jam/jelly, olives, pickles, nuts, or sliced vegetables.

Traditional charcuterie boards can also feature only meats and may be served alongside cheese boards.

The foods on the board are grouped (with aesthetically pleasing placement, including smaller bowls, plates, etc.) on a large wood board or plate. They are typically in small portions to allow for a small group to gather and eat from the communal platter.

As a friend described it to me: it’s a grown-up lunchable. 🙂

The latest charcuterie board trend in the United States has spawned all sorts of different non-traditional varieties. Dessert charcuterie boards and charcuterie trays featuring cooked foods such as falafel, tacos, and kebabs, along with a variety of toppings, have all become popular.

So here’s our take: a hot dog and hamburger charcuterie board that’s perfect for loading up on your favorite classic American BBQ foods!

How to Make a Hot Dog and Burger Charcuterie Board for Your Next BBQ

A grilled charcuterie board like this makes it easy to serve your family and friends at summer cookouts or at a tailgate part. Just one serving board has all the essentials for 6-8 people!

No more running in and out of the house with this plate and that dish, and – bonus! – fewer serving dishes to wash later.

1: Select a Charcuterie Tray and Accessories

Since the point of the charcuterie board is to make the BBQ fixings look beautiful, you want to start with a beautiful tray!

For charcuterie, we recommend a large tray, at least 18-20″ diameter or square. It should have handles and a slight lip or curve at the edge. This keeps things from sliding off as you move the tray and as people serve themselves.

Charcuterie boards are traditionally made from wood. Flex your DIY muscle and build your own tray if you want!

For outside grilling, a wood tray will work, or ceramic, metal, or melamine are good cost-effective alternatives to a wood charcuterie board.

To organize the charcuterie board food, you’ll also want some smaller plates and dishes, such as ceramic ramekins, dipping bowls, and saucers.

Remember, the point is to let the food shine, so classic white or glass dishes are a great option!

2: Decide What You’re Serving

What to put on a charcuterie tray? Anything you want!

For our traditional American hot dog and hamburger charcuterie board, we used:

  • Hamburgers – We make ours with ground beef but you can use whatever blend of meats you like or buy pre-made hamburger patties. You can also try making veggie burgers.
  • Hot Dogs – You can get the best hot dogs from a local maker or you can choose your favorite simple hot dog at the grocery store. You can also try serving a variety of hot dogs made in different regional hot dog styles.
  • Hamburger and Hot Dog Buns – Serve these on a separate tray or cake plate to save room and prevent them from getting soggy.
  • Condiments – Serve ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, and relish in ramekins or dipping bowls with small serving spoons or knives for spreading.
  • Sliced Cheese – We used pre-sliced American and Swiss. You can choose other varieties too like gouda, monterey jack, or cheddar cheese.
  • Pickles – Serve pickle spears or pickle chips on small plates or in a small serving bowl on the side.
  • Lettuce – You can either shred lettuce or separate it into leaves.
  • Tomatoes – We like to stack nice, thick slices of tomatoes.
  • Red onion – Slice the onion thinly.
  • Bacon – For big batches of bacon, we like to cook it in the oven ahead of time.
  • Extras – A great addition to the board is a selection of fruits and snacks like watermelon, blackberries, potato chips, and sweets like salt water taffy, peanut butter cups, jelly beans, and Oreo cookies. An easy way to prevent chips and cookies from becoming soggy, or fruits from mingling with the meat, is placing them in small bowls.
  • Other – You can come up with your own creative toppings from spicy pimento cheese, creamy coleslaw, or jalapenos to barbecue sauce or teriyaki sauce. This board is a fun way to experiment with different flavor combinations.

3: Start Assembling Your Grilled Charcuterie Board

For quick assembly, so you can eat as soon as the food is cooked, precut and portion all the ingredients. For items like pickles and tomatoes that are juicy, use a small plate or tray.

While the hamburgers and hot dogs are on the grill, start assembling your tray.

You’ll start with the largest grilled charcuterie board ingredients and then fill in the gaps with the smaller items. Shuffle things around as needed to fit.
