Equipment

  • 1 large charcuterie board or tray
  • 4+ small ramekins or serving dishes

Ingredients

  • Hamburgers - We make ours with ground beef but you can use whatever blend of meats you like or buy pre-made hamburger patties. You can also try making veggie burgers.
  • Hot Dogs - You can get the best hot dogs from a local maker or you can choose your favorite simple hot dog at the grocery store. You can also try serving a variety of hot dogs made in different regional hot dog styles.
  • Hamburger and Hot Dog Buns - Serve these on a separate tray or cake plate to save room and prevent them from getting soggy.
  • Condiments - Serve ketchup mustard, mayonnaise, and relish in ramekins or dipping bowls with small serving spoons or knives for spreading.
  • Sliced Cheese – We used pre-sliced American and Swiss. You can choose other varieties too like gouda monterey jack, or cheddar cheese.
  • Pickles - Serve pickle spears or pickle chips on small plates or in a small serving bowl on the side.
  • Lettuce - You can either shred lettuce or separate it into leaves
  • Tomatoes - We like to stack nice thick slices of tomatoes.
  • Red onion - Slice the onion thinly.
  • Bacon - For big batches of bacon we like to cook it in the oven ahead of time.
  • Extras – A great addition to the board is a selection of fruits and snacks like watermelon blackberries, potato chips, and sweets like salt water taffy, peanut butter cups, jelly beans, and Oreo cookies. An easy way to prevent chips and cookies from becoming soggy, or fruits from mingling with the meat, is placing them in small bowls.
  • Other - You can come up with your own creative toppings from spicy pimento cheese creamy coleslaw, or jalapenos to barbecue sauce, teriyaki sauce, or even an egg! This board is a fun way to experiment with different flavor combinations.
  • While the hamburgers and hot dogs are on the grill start assembling your tray.

Instructions

  • You’ll start with the largest grilled charcuterie board ingredients and then fill in the gaps with the smaller items. Shuffle things around as needed to fit.
  • Add the bowls with condiments, and plates with pickles.
  • Next add the larger items like watermelon or lettuce, and leave a spot for the burgers and hot dogs. (We added them here to show, but recommend adding them last, to serve while hot.)
  • Now for medium size items, like bacon and cheese slices. Pre-sliced cheese with the papers left in between slices makes it easy to add to your burger!
  • Then place toppings like sliced onions, tomatoes, and other burger fixings on the board.
  • Fill in holes with the smallest items like chips, cookies, berries, and candy.
